I’d told him that I wasn’t completely inexperienced—a thing he seemed to have forgotten until just this moment, while I showed him just what I knew how to do. Within the hot hollow of my mouth, I swirled my tongue, getting the length of him good and wet, which made him groan.
“Jesus H. Christ, Shelby,” he gritted out while I worked over him.
Almost as if his hand had no volition of its own, it dropped to my bobbing head and twined in my hair. And I could hear his breathing get heavier. “Shelby…”
God I loved how he said my name. I was already so turned on that I had to squeeze my thighs together just to take the pressure off the heat building there. And when I squeezed my thighs together, I felt the wetness soak my panties. Because no matter how many times I’d touched Colton before, I never stopped being amazed at the six pack abs. The long lean arms, in all their wiry strength. I couldn’t stop touching is body. And the memory of how that body had made me scream before only made me suck harder.
But Colt’s hand tightened in my hair as if to stop me. “Shelby. Baby. I am already rock hard…”
“I know,” I said, pausing to look him in the eye before taking a long lick at the underside of his shaft. “I can feel you pulsing against my lips and it’s making me crazy.”
Colt grimaced in pleasure or pain or both. “You’re killing me, sexy girl. But if you keep this up, you’re gonna take me past the point of no return, and I’m gonna be filling your mouth with more than my cock…”
There’s a certain freedom in knowing that you’re already knocked up. It means you don’t have to stop. You don’t have to worry about consequences. I didn’t worry about any of those things as I reluctantly pulled my lips from his erection with a popping noise, then crawled up his legs to straddle him in the bed.
Colt shifted slightly so that his head fell back onto the pillow, then his eyes lowered to half-mast, lustful and maybe a bit lazy. “Shelby, you got any idea what you’re doing?”
“No,” I confessed, riding his thick shaft with nothing but my wet panties between us. “But I’m a smart girl. I’m guessing I can figure it out.”
The flush of his arousal made his cheeks ruddy. “Oh, I’m guessing you can, too. But—”
“You wanted to make me yours,” I said, with a slow roll of my hips that made him take a sharp breath. “I know. But I’ve always been yours, Colt. Now I wanna make you mine.”
“Hmmm,” Colt said, squinting at me. “Not sure how I feel about—”
His words cut off when I peeled my shirt and bra off. Then he just stared a moment as if he’d never seen me naked before. I didn’t think I could look different already, but my nipples were darker, and that seemed to fascinate him.
“What aren’t you sure about?” I asked, drawing his hard powerful hands to my bare breasts.
He squeezed them both, then rolled each hard, swollen nipple between his fingers, until I groaned. And Colt gave a shake of his head. “Fuck, never mind. You do whatever you want.”
What I wanted was to have him inside me. So while he stroked my breasts and belly and hips, I reached down and pulled my panties to the side. Just enough to make room for me to sink down onto him. Which I did, with a satisfied hiss. And it felt so good. So goddamned good that we both seemed deprived of our powers of speech for a moment.
“I love that,” Colt finally said, his hands settling on my ass.
“What?” I asked, dying of pleasure to take him this deep.
“I love the way your eyes flutter every time I fill you up inside,” Colt said, reaching up and pulling the clip from my hair so that it all came tumbling down around my bare shoulders. “You’re so fucking beautiful, Shelby. You’re like an angel.”
“We both know I ain’t no angel.” I aimed to prove it to him with a thrust of my hips. What a different sensation it was to be on top. The angle made my clit press hard against his pubic bone, and it felt so good.
With only the hint of a grin, Colt took my hands and put my palms to his chest to give me balance. Then he flexed those slim hips of his own up off the mattress, pushing his hardness into me in a way that surprised me and made me cry out.
“Shit, did that hurt?” he asked, eyes flying wide.
I was so needy that I nearly slapped his chest in frustration. “Lord, no. Do it again. Please…”
Nearly quivering with his own needs, Colt held back, his hand drifting lower, to my belly, where we both knew his child was growing. “But, I don’t want to hurt you or the baby.”
“You won’t,” I said, sure of it. Sure, too, that the heat roiling inside me was going to boil over in an orgasm. Clenching my bare thighs around his waist, I slowly slid myself up and down on his shaft. A sensation that caused me to start shaking with anticipation. “Do it again, Colt. Please!”
The look of concern in his expression melted away to something else. Something a tiny bit smug. “Not ready yet, Shelby. Because when you come, I’m gonna come. And you’re close. I can tell. But I want your whole body shaking with desire before we pull the trigger.”
His hands tightened on my ass, and slowed the roll of my hips. Controlling them. Pushing and pulling until I was biting my lip and giving him a torturously slow ride. I felt all kinds of exposed to him in this position. His eyes feasted on my face, my jiggling breasts, my bare belly, and the view of our bodies joined, groin to groin was profoundly affecting.
Our naked bodies looked amazing together, I’m not gonna lie. And I was so in love with him I could’ve cried. In fact, I teared up, even as I was getting closer and closer to the edge. Because I was supposed to make Colt love me back, but all I could think about was how much I needed him to love me all by himself.
To love me for who I was. Raw. Just like this. With my skin burning up. My muscles tightening up beneath all that heat.
His shoulders were tightening too, a sheen of sweat on his long arms as he churned me slowly atop him. “You’re so wet and slippery inside, Shelby. And I’m so deep in you it aches.”
It did ache. In the best possible way. I felt like we were never more connected or more together in our whole lives. In a sort of trance of love for him, I bent forward and to kiss his mouth, loving the feel of his stubble against my chin. But all at once another instinct overtook me and I bit down softly on his lower lip.
“Minx,” he accused, licking the spot I bit, his eyes going dark and smoky. And with a light slap on my backside, he urged me to move a little faster.
Next thing I knew we were straining together, meeting each other thrust for thrust. A crazy liquid heat spread between our legs. I said something. I dunno what. Or maybe he said something. The truth was, our voices sort of joined each other in some kind of incoherent choir of ecstasy. The sound of the bedsprings bouncing, the rush of my breath, the thumping of his heart in his chest.
All of it a sensual music that drove the rhythm of our dance.
My arms were shaking. My belly too. And as a white searing heat nearly blinded me with pleasure, I cried out his name. “Colt!”
“Come for me, love,” he whispered.
Love. He’d never called me that before. And it shocked me. It nearly shocked me right out of my own body. But then I was brought back down into matters of the flesh by his fingers tightening on my hips to the bruising point.
“Come for me,” he said again, his voice guttural with need.
And I obeyed him. Oh, yes, I did. The pulses between my legs expanded into deep throbbing contractions. It felt so good. More powerful than anything I’d ever felt before. The orgasmic sensation just kept growing until my toes were curling, my body was undulating, and a loud high pitched scream came out of me that probably carried all the way to the neighboring farms.
I didn’t care. I didn’t care enough to be embarrassed. I didn’t care about anything but the perfect harmony we found as Colt stiffened and his mouth found mine. He made a sound against my lips, against my tongue, something like a grunt or a groan as his cock twitched in my spasming center. Je
t after jet of hot semen flooded into me and soothing the pleasurable ache such that I think I came all over again on him.
We’d kiss and cry out, and kiss and cry out, both of our bodies locked together in carnal bliss until I finally collapsed on his chest, the two of us gasping for breath as his arms wrapped around me. Please love me, I thought. And not just for the sake of the baby or my future. But because I thought I’d rather die if he didn’t.
Chapter Nine
COLTON
Jesus H. Christ. That wasn’t the kind of sex Colt had been anticipating when he carried Shelby up the stairs. He’d been aiming for the kind of long and lazy lovemaking that lasted for three days. Instead it had turned into something totally wild and uninhibited with full-frontal Shelby writhing atop him like a private dancer.
It’d just about blown his mind to see her riding him to orgasm, so he wasn’t about to complain. Besides, whatever Shelby needed right now, he was happy to give her. Anything, he thought. I’d do anything for you. For both of you.
And that was a thought he’d never had before in his life.
Which is why it startled him when she whispered against his shoulder, “Do you love me?”
“My god, woman. Do I need to prove it to you again, already? Give me ten minutes and I’ll give it another go.” Then, feeling the stirrings in his body as her silken hair fanned out over his chest he said. “Maybe only five minutes. Tops.”
He thought she’d laugh but her voice got serious, and she looked up at him with an expression of doubt that made him hurt to his bones. “But this doesn’t change anything between us, does it?”
“Changes everything,” Colt said, feeling mighty confused. “Remember how long it took me to tell you that I loved you?”
The way she nodded broke his heart. Broke it open just wide enough to admit some hard things to her. “Well, here’s something I didn’t tell you. You’re the only woman I ever spoke those words to. The only woman I ever even felt that for. Maybe it’s because of our fucked up situation growing up. Maybe we’re the only two people in the world who know what it was like to come of age in this house. Maybe nobody else can understand me, so I never let myself open up to anybody else. But when people in this town says that I only ever had eyes for you, they’re right, Shelby. Only you.”
Tears shone in her eyes, but he couldn’t tell if they were good tears or bad tears. “You can’t say that—you can’t mean that—until I tell you the truth. And I’m not telling the lawman. I’m telling you. Because I can’t bear to have your love on a lie or some kind of manipulation…”
Well, that didn’t sound good. Colt’s gut clenched, and he braced for whatever he was about to hear. “Okaaay. Shoot.”
Shelby sat up and pulled the sheet around her body. “My father. He’s running. He asked me to come here and maybe hoped it’d serve as a distraction to give him a head start.” She let out a little sound of anguish. “You got no idea how it tears me apart to tell—”
“Shelby,” Colt said, reaching for her cheek. “Your father turned himself in.”
The way her eyes flew wide, he could see that she genuinely knew nothing about it even before she gasped out a horrified, “What?”
Colt reached for her hand, almost as confused as she seemed to be. “Your father turned himself in. Walked right up to the car my chief was sitting in, tapped on the window, and confessed everything. I got the call fifteen minutes before you showed up at my door.”
She gaped at him. Gulped in air. Then those tears spilled over her lashes and splashed on his arm. “Why? Why would he do that?”
“To protect you, I think,” Colt said, feeling a grudging respect for the man. Feeling gratitude, too. “Said he put up all those car parts for sale on the internet by himself. Said he kept his own books.”
“You know that ain’t true,” Shelby cried, twisting her hands in the sheets in a way that showed her guilt and agony. She loved her father. No matter who he was or what he’d done. It was probably going to kill her to let him take the fall for everything.
But she was going to let him. Colt would make sure of it. Brushing his thumbs over her cheeks to wipe the tears away, he said, “What I know is that Buford Baker is turning out to be a pretty good father after all. And I’ll be damned if I won’t be a better one. Which means we’re gonna let him do the right thing by you. And I’m gonna do the right thing by you.”
Shelby cried. She cried hard. She put her face into her hands and it all came out in a torrent of grief and it tore him up inside. She ought to have blamed him for this. And maybe she did, because when he tried to hug her, she pushed him away. “No, Colt,” she sobbed. “If we’re talking about right and wrong, then I belong in jail too. You should take me in.”
“No can do,” Colt said. “You see, I don’t know what you’ve been up to, Shelby. I got my suspicions. I could go poking around and find out. But that’s not gonna happen. Hell, I didn’t even feel the need to go see your father in cuffs.”
She blinked a little bit. “Now that you mention it, I’d have thought you’d have rushed out of here to personally witness him being hauled away.”
“I thought so too,” Colt admitted, trying to wipe her tears away. “Thought that news would be the best I ever got in my life. But when it came down to it, I felt nothing but hollow inside.”
“Because you didn’t catch him,” she said, bitterly. “Because he gave up. Snatched the victory away from you.”
Oh, Shelby knew how to press on a sore spot alright. Guess that’s maybe why he loved her so much. There wasn’t anybody who could challenge him that way and make him examine his insides without all his bullshit and pride.
“Maybe,” Colt said, drawing his knees up on the bed. “But when I got the news that Buford had given himself up, my first thought was of you. Of the pain it would cause you. I couldn’t triumph in it, because I realized in that moment that Buford Baker was never my white whale. You are.”
Shelby’s face dissolved into an expression of both bewilderment and offense. “You’re what?”
“You’re my white whale,” Colt said, with a soft chuckle. “I won’t stop till I’ve got you.”
Her face screwed up as if she was going to hit him. “Is that supposed to sound romantic?”
Colt swallowed. “Well, yeah.”
Because it was, wasn’t it?
Shelby eyed him sideways. “If you ever call me a white whale when I’m swelled up fat with your baby, it’s over. You know that right?”
“Duly noted,” Colt said, because what he heard in that was that they were together. Truly together. And he wasn’t ever letting anything come between them again. Sobering, he said, “I didn’t use you to get him, Shelby. I swear to you.”
“I know,” she said, looking off through the window.
He made her look at him. “Hear me when I say I vow to spend every day of my life making up to you for every moment of pain I ever caused you.”
Colt drew her down into a kiss. She surrendered to it. Surrendered to him. And it felt like what he’d said about starting over was true. His fingers found the cross he wore around his neck, and he said, “You’ve got my vow, Shelby. And that goes beyond any oath I’ve ever taken. Beyond my badge. Beyond anything.”
“Then I guess you and me are just a couple of outlaws,” Shelby said, stroking his cheek with a forgiveness and grace he wasn’t sure he’d be capable of if the situations were reversed. “Bonnie and Clyde…”
“Now that sounds like a fun bedroom game,” Colt said, forcing himself to leave the warmth of her arms and rise from the bed. “But there’s at least one last thing I still want to do that’s on the straight and narrow.”
Colt went the bureau where his mother’s jewelry box still sat. He reached for it. Her engagement ring. Not the one that Buford had given her, but the one his father had given his Momma. Turns out, he was glad she wasn’t buried with it after all. “Shelby Baker, would you do me the honor—”
“No!” she shrieked
, bringing his heart to a standstill in his chest.
“No?” Colt asked, feeling more confused than ever. They’d just been having a moment. At least he thought they were. “Jesus H. Christ. I didn’t even ask the question yet.”
“I know what you’re gonna ask and you oughta be ashamed of yourself,” she said. “Asking me on this crazy day, naked as a jaybird, without even going down on one knee. I thought your Momma raised a gentleman.”
Colt smirked. “A minute ago, you said she raised an outlaw.”
Shelby smeared her teary cheeks and seemed to regain that inner strength that defined her. “You think I wanna tell your child that I gave you my virtue on a barroom pool table and that you proposed to me after we nearly broke your Momma’s bed next to a door with a hole blown through it?”
Well, when she put it like that…
Goddamn, he loved her fire. And he was done trying to change her, because he loved her just the way she was. “Well, I suppose we better get our stories straight before our kid is old enough to be asking questions,” Colt allowed, sliding back into bed with her. “Alright, alright. We’ll do it all romantic like. But you will have me, won’t you Shelby?”
“Forever,” she said, and sealed it with a kiss.
And everything that was empty in Colt filled up to the brim. He was done with the guilt and the grief and the anger. Done trying to prove himself. Done running from this town and his past. Done with everything but being a good husband and father. As soon as Shelby would let him.
Colt pressed a kiss to her shoulder, pulling her warm body against his. “In the meantime, can I distract you from your woes with that Bonnie and Clyde fantasy…”

I’ve always had a thing for bad boys.
But the problem with falling for bad boys? They’re bad. Sometimes they’re really bad. Like my boyfriend, Carlos, who drove that lesson home to me by punching me in the mouth because he didn’t like the way men in his club were looking at me.
