LOOK INSIDE
I stripped down and sank into the water, allowing the intensity of the heat and effervescence to envelope my body. The anxiety and fear that had been building inside me since this morning’s revelation started to melt away. I closed my eyes and relaxed. Thomas would take care of me. He wouldn’t let anything happen to me. Even Drake… Drake.
I let my hands glide over my body, and I imagined it was his touch on my skin. My mind flashed back to last night’s heated kiss. My palm slid between my legs, pressing hard against my mound. I imagined it was his thick bulge pushing into me as he pinned me against the wall. My finger traced over my center and I imagined it was Drake’s tongue coaxing my desire to the surface. I arched my back and rolled my hips, moaning Drake’s name, louder and louder as I savored every tingle on the way to my orgasm. At last, my climax rushed over me, sending shockwaves through my entire body as I cried his name out one last time. “Drake!” I crumpled against the edge of the bathtub, gasping with every tiny aftershock.
“Em!” My eyes fluttered open as Drake burst through the bathroom door.
“What the hell, Drake?!” I jerked back with a scream, covering myself.
“Are you okay?” Drake’s eyes darted around the room. “I heard you calling me. I thought you were in trouble.”
“Yes! I’m fine!” I pouted. “I was just…”
“Oh,” Drake’s eyes widened as he realized what he had heard. “Em…”
“Don’t, Drake.” I stood up. His gaze fell onto my naked breasts as I stepped out of the bathtub. “You made your feelings quite clear last night. Can you just go, please?” I yanked a towel around body and tried to push past him.
“No,” he refused, catching my arm in his hand. “I mean… I’ll go, if that’s what you really want.” His tone was softer now.
“Is that… what you want?” I responded, suddenly unsure of myself.
“You heard what Dad said, Em. They’re getting divorced. We can finally…”
Drake’s eyes sparkled in the candlelight. Every curve of his muscles was accentuated by the shadows dancing across the room. I let my towel drop to the floor, revealing my nude body once again. He drew me close to him with one hand, cupping the back of my neck with the other. We stood in silence, unmoving as we stared into each other’s eyes, breathing in unison.
“I ache for you,” I whispered.
“One step. That’s all it would take to close the distance between us and take you into my arms, into that bed. But then there’s no going back,” Drake warned. “It has to be you and me, Em. Forever.”
“I’m ready,” I promised. “You and me. It’s all I’ve ever wanted.”
He drew me closer, our mouths and bodies meeting in an urgent embrace. Our kisses were frenzied and needy. I yanked at his shirt, desperate to feel his bare chest against mine. He tore it over his head and stumbled out of his boxers, then lifted me up around his waist. I wrapped my legs around him, never breaking our kiss until he lay me down on the bed. He lowered himself on top of me, gazing into my eyes as he paused with the tip of his rigid cock pushing at my entrance.
“Em?”
“Yes, Drake. Make love to me.”

ONE
The party was in full swing. Hundreds of guests had shown up at my parents’ invitation to celebrate my 18th birthday and high school graduation, which happened to fall on the same weekend. I appreciated the sentiment, but I’d had a long day, and the crowd was starting to overwhelm me. I needed a break. I weaved through the throngs of people, a polite smile plastered across my face as I made my way inside. I finally managed to reach the safety of my bedroom and closed the door behind me. I kicked off my Jimmy Choo heels, leaned against the door, and sank to the floor with a sigh of relief.
“I can’t believe I’m finally finished with high school,” I said to myself.
“Me neither!” I heard my stepbrother’s voice coming from the balcony shared between our bedrooms. I leaned forward, peering into the darkness beyond the open French doors. “It’s about time!”
“Drake!” I jumped up and raced toward him, tripping over the threshold as I ran. I was just reaching out to brace my fall when I felt his hands around my waist, pulling me back up.
“Hey, Kid. Graceful as ever, I see,” he laughed. I felt a warm flush creeping over my face and down my neck at the sound of his voice. Drake always had that effect on me.
“You came,” I said, standing to smooth my skirt down over my legs. He stepped toward me, into the light, allowing me to see him for the first time in two years. Drake had changed. His shoulders were broader, his arms and torso more muscular than before. His hair fell in wild waves over his brow, accentuating the way his eyes gleamed when he smiled. God, how I loved his smile. I loved the way it crinkled the corners of his eyes and created a dimple in his left cheek. It was the kind of smile that could move mountains.
“Of course I did. I wouldn’t have missed this for the world.”
“But weren’t you supposed to start your summer abroad last week?” I asked, curious about his sudden reappearance at home. After our parents got married, we were practically inseparable. But since he left home for college, Drake had done everything in his power to avoid coming home. Internships during his breaks, summers abroad. The few times he had come back to visit always seemed to fall
on weekends when I was out of town. We texted and emailed, but that was no substitute for the quality time I had been missing so much since he moved away.
“Change of plans,” he said. “Dad needed me here. He needs me to sign some legal documents of some sort. For the company.”
“Oh,” I nodded. I couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed. Of course Drake had come back because of business. It was silly to hope he had come back for me. “I understand.”
“And,” His voice softened as he inched closer to me, his hand tilting my chin up, “I really did want to see you.” My stomach tightened. This is it, I thought. After all this time, he’s finally going to kiss me. He leaned down, and my breath hitched in my throat. I closed my eyes and parted my lips, tiptoeing to meet his. And then I felt the quick brush of his mouth across my cheek.
I opened my eyes and stepped back, confused. And embarrassed. I may have been harboring feelings for Drake for years, but that didn’t mean he felt the same way. Besides, he was my stepbrother. If he knew the sort of thoughts that ran through my head when I thought about him, he would probably be repulsed. And there I was, thinking he was about to kiss me. I had clearly misread the situation.
“I’ve missed you, Kid.” Drake wrapped his arms around me, pulling me in tight. The bulge in his designer jeans pressed against my center, telling me I hadn’t misread him at all. Desire sparked in my belly. I buried my face against his neck, breathing in his scent as my heart pounded in my chest.
“Then why have you stayed away so long?” I asked.
I had wanted him for years, and now he was back. But for how long? If I didn’t make a move tonight, I may never have another chance.
“Because I didn’t have a choice.” I felt Drake’s neck tighten as he gritted his teeth. His pulse was racing, too. “I didn’t trust myself around you.” I bit my lip, summoning every ounce of courage I had. Be bold, Emily.
“I’m eighteen now,” pointing out the obvious.
“I know,” he conceded. He reached up to brush a stray lock of hair away from my face, giving it a light tug before tucking it behind my ear. His fingertips grazed my earlobe, and I felt myself getting wet. “But that doesn’t make it right. You’re my sister.”
“Step sister. We’re not related by blood,” I corrected.
“Drake… I saw the way you were looking at me a few minutes ago. I can tell you want this, too.”
“I do,” he confessed. Drake then slid his hands down my arms and wove his fingers through mine. I pressed my hips forward, relishing the solidness of my stepbrother’s arousal as it nestled between my legs. That was all it took. Drake pushed me against the wall, and pinned my hands above my head with a long, low moan. He crushed his lips to mine, and the world seemed to crack open. I drank him in, savoring the taste of champagne and cinnamon gum on his tongue as it rolled over mine. That little spark of desire in my belly ignited into a full-blown fire. Blood rushed between my legs, driving me to grind my hips against my stepbrother as he kissed me, my body begging him for more. Then as quickly as he was on me, he tore himself off.
“Fuck!” he growled, running a hand through his hair as he walked away from me.
“Drake, what…?”
“Emily,” he started, his voice sounding pained. “We can’t…” He stood with his back to me, clenching the iron railing with such intensity his knuckles turned pale.
“But you said you wanted…” My lower lip trembled as my earlier embarrassment washed over me again. I slumped against the brick wall, crestfallen.
“It doesn’t matter what I want. Or how badly I want it. As long as our parents are married, the world sees us as siblings. My Dad has worked so hard to make Dawson Industries a success. A scandal like that would ruin the company’s reputation. I just can’t do that to our family. I can’t do that to him.”
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have…” My voice broke as I began to cry. I rushed inside and locked myself in the bathroom, unable to face my stepbrother. I sat on the floor, sobbing as I berated myself for being so stupid. Drake was right. Thomas was a wonderful father. He had been my provider, my protector and my savior. He had given me everything. But I’d never wanted anyone - or anything - as badly as I wanted his son. I didn’t know how to turn those feelings off. But clearly, I needed to try.
By the time I pulled myself together and went back outside, my stepbrother was gone. I pulled the balcony doors closed and turned the lock. Then I crawled into bed and cried myself to sleep.
TWO
The next morning, I was sitting at the table, absently poking at my food at when my stepfather Thomas wandered in to the kitchen. Thomas was the kindest, most caring person I had ever known. He married my mother Linda when I was only 13, and had been a doting father and role model to me ever since.
“Morning, Kiddo,” he said as he walked by, ruffling my hair.
“Morning, Dad. Coffee?” I didn’t need to wait for his answer before getting up to pour him a cup. Thomas knew how to make his own coffee, but he always joked that it tasted better when I did it. I told him it was because I added cinnamon to the grounds, but he insisted it was the extra love that went into the preparation.
“Always,” he replied. “Feel like a grownup today?”
“Eh,” I replied. “Doesn’t really feel any different than yesterday.” I set his mug on the counter and refilled my own.
“It will, soon enough,” he assured me. “Especially when you move to New Haven. Big changes are on the horizon, Em.” I nodded, agreeing he was probably right, but thinking I probably wouldn’t like those changes. I was thrilled to be going to Yale in the fall. I was even more thrilled at the opportunity to get away from my mother. I just wasn’t sure I was ready to be on my own, so far from my stepfather’s wisdom and guidance.
“Dad, I’ve been thinking. Maybe I should go to an in-state school. I still have that acceptance to University of Texas, and then you wouldn’t be so alone. You know, with Mom.”
“Emily,” Thomas frowned. “Why don’t we drink our coffee in my office?”
“Okay.” I followed my stepfather across the house into his home office and flopped down on the cushy leather Chesterfield sofa. He pressed the intercom button to call upstairs.
“Drake. Come downstairs, son. Family meeting in my office.” The intercom beeped, signaling Drake’s answer.
“Be right down.”
I shifted in my seat, uncomfortable at the thought of having to face Drake so soon after last night’s unexpected encounter. Less than a minute later, I was taking a sip of coffee when he sauntered through the door wearing nothing but a pair of plaid cotton pajama pants. I froze, hoping the mug I held to my lips was large enough to hide the need painted on my face. I had been turned on by his newly muscular physique last night, but his shirtless chest made it impossible to ignore the stirrings between my legs. Drake dropped onto the sofa beside me, close enough that knee touched mine.
“Morning, Sis.” My stomach tightened.
“Morning,” I mumbled. I inhaled the aroma of my Guatemalan roast, willing it to sooth my jittery nerves, then lowered the mug to my lap and glanced at my stepfather. “Where’s Mom?”
“She’s not coming,” Thomas answered. He eased into his favorite wingback chair and took a drink. “This family meeting is just for the three of us.”
“What’s up, Dad?” Drake leaned forward. I cocked my head, sharing in his concern.
“Emily, it’s no secret your mother and I have faced several… relationship challenges… over the years.”
I nodded. In the beginning, she gave an Oscar-worthy performance in her role as the doting wife, nurturing mother and well-connected socialite. But it wasn’t long before the newlywed luster wore off, and he saw her for what she really was: a narcissistic, manipulative control freak.
Thomas only saw my mother hit me once, but he knew it had happened more often than I would ever care to admit. He did his best to manage my mother’s violent temper with a distractions like
charity events, expensive vacations, wild shopping sprees, and an endless supply of mood stabilizers. He could have divorced her at any time, but didn’t want to leave me alone with her. He knew his presence was the only thing standing between me and and an endless cycle of verbal, emotional and physical abuse, so he decided to stay. I knew he had to be weary from fighting her, but he never showed it. Not to me, at least.
“Now that you’re an adult, you have the freedom to make your own decisions,” Thomas continued. “Including where you want to live. I hope you know I will always consider you family, and you are always welcome here, even after we’re divorced.” I blinked.
“Wait… what?” I rolled my lower lip between my teeth, biting it as I tried to piece together what my stepfather just said.
“Your mother left this morning. She’ll be staying at the beach house until we sort through the specifics of the divorce. My security team will be here within the hour to change the locks and alarm codes. I have to go to Dallas for a few days to close the Dawson Tower deal, but we’re going to put a team on your mother to keep an eye on her, make sure she doesn’t do anything rash.”
Coffee sloshed in my cup as my hands started to shake. Without a word, my stepbrother took the mug and placed it on the table, then clasped his hands over mine.
“It’s okay, Em.” He looked to his father for confirmation. Thomas nodded.
“Drake, I called you home because I know Emily and I will both need your support while we adjust to these changes. I want you to stay here with Emily until I get back from Dallas.” My stepbrother squeezed my hand, and I looked over at him, comforted by his protective demeanor. “No leaving the house. No visitors, no parties. I know it’s a lot to ask, but it’s only a few days. If you need anything, one of my drivers will be on call.”
“I’m glad you called me home, Dad. I’ll take care of Emily,” Drake promised. “I won’t leave her side.”
Thomas smiled. For a moment I thought I saw a twinge of sadness in his eyes.
“Alright, you two. Family meeting adjourned. Give your old Dad a hug.” Thomas held his arms open, and I went to him, squeezing him tight.
